California Must Address Deep Poverty (op‑ed, 2015)

After I left the San Diego Hunger Coalition, I have continued working with Californians for SSI (#CA4SSI), a statewide coalition of anti-hunger, senior and disability rights advocates committed to eliminating poverty among those who rely on the Supplemental Security Income program to survive. The membership of the coalition overlaps substantially with the Health and Human Services (HHS) Network, a collaboration of anti-poverty advocates of all stripes who coordinate across the states. I wrote this op-ed, with two other CA4SSI/HHS Network advocates, about how the state should respond to deep poverty, a problem profoundly exacerbated by California’s high housing costs.

State legislature should have a special session on poverty, too. Sacramento Bee, Aug. 16, 2015
